Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU)

Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) was established in 1997, being among the first private universities to be accredited in Tanzania in the year 2000, it has since then received local, regional and international recognition.

It was the idea of Prof Hubert C.M Kairuki and his wife Mrs Kokushubira Kairuki to establish the University, moved by the situation in Tanzania after independence in 1961, whereby diseases, poverty and ignorance were declared the country’s key enemies.

Initially HKMU University was established as Mikocheni International University of Health Sciences (MIUHS), with a focus towards addressing training needs for health professionals in Tanzania, and in sub-Saharan Africa.

In 1998 the name was changed to Mikocheni International University, anticipating the possibility of expanding beyond health sciences. Finally in February 1999 the University’s name was changed to Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, in the honour of the founder, Prof Hubert Kairuki, after he passed away.

The University is expanding into other programs and disciplines of science and humanities. Recent established training programs include; Master of Social Work, Master of Science in Public Health, Research and Development in Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms.

HKMU is growing to a level where it is becoming the pride of private Universities in the East African region due to the quality and excellence of its programs. Currently the University has attracted students from over 15 different nationalities, external funding and technical support for collaborative research and development activities.

Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of medicine focuses on training health professionals who are conversant with health problems of the communities they will serve, who have knowledge, skills and above all, appropriate attitudes that will make them satisfactorily competent to deliver health services to the society.

We are committed to developing a strong academic community of staff and students working together to fulfill our mission which is to; educate the next generation of upfront professionals in medicine, to deliver outstanding medical research, to apply the benefits of discovery to improve public health and to build a strong and supportive academic community.

The Faculty of Medicine started in 1997 when we enrolled our first six medical students, a milestone which brought us to 221 students in the 2015/16 academic year. The lectures work hard to see these students acquire the maximum required competences and be commendable doctors who would serve our community and across borders. We are convinced we are not only preparing future doctor but also competent scientists and leaders out of them. Appreciations to the lecturers who have been working tirelessly to see our students graduate with required knowledge.

Faculty of Medicine offers a 5 year Doctor of medicine degree program aimed at training doctors, equipping them with required competences; so as to be well prepared for the profession using wholistic approach in managing health and community challenges. Future doctors should be, “Competent in Science and Art of Medicine.” They should strive to become competent doctors who can also conduct researches and deliver expected community services. In doing so, it exposes them to wider perspective and capabilities in the Healthcare system. Acquired excellent scientific general education will help them serve as “Catalysts” for bringing social change.

Faculty of Nursing

The Faculty of Nursing offers 4 years of Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme. Administratively, the faculty is currently headed by the Dean, Mr. Amiri R. Mmaka who is the overall in charge of all academic and administrative matters .

The faculty has a motivated workforce that is highly committed to training competent nurse graduates, who will be definitely recruited by; the government, faith Based Organizations, private health facilities, training and research institutions locally and internationally.

The University is committed in educating men and women who will bring noticeable impact to the society. Today we are proud of our achievement as a private university which has been acquired through dedication and hard work; the students’ population in the faculty of nursing has increased from 2 students in the academic year 1998/1999 to 276 students in the academic year 2017/2018.

The Faculty of Nursing is committed to the overall wellbeing of its neighbouring communities. It has been offering free outreach health and consultancy services to the population in neighbouring communities since 1999. Also proving community based health care services to schools, families, health facilities, and to special groups such as pregnant mothers, children, orphans, street children, and elderly centres in the community. To date over 500,000 people in Tanzania; in areas such as Maneromango, Mzenga, Msanga, Chole, Masanganya, Masaki, Sungwi and many others have benefited from those outreach and consultancy health services.

Entry requirements:

1. Direct entry

Holders of Advanced Certificate in Secondary Education (ACSEE) or its equivalent with 3 principal passes in chemistry, biology and either physics/ mathematics/nutrition with a minimum of 6 points. To qualify for admission, one must have at least C grade in chemistry, and at least D grade in biology and E grade in physics /mathematics/ nutrition.

2. Equivalent qualifications

Holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with at least 5 passes including 2 credit passes in chemistry and biology and a D Grade in physics PLUS Diploma in Nursing with an average of B+ or GPA of 3.5.
Holders of BSc degree (Lower second or above) majoring in physics/mathematics, chemistry, biology/zoology.
