Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership development and career support are recognized as important priorities under the People Strategy 2018-21 including emphasis on coaching and mentoring, and building diverse and inclusive networks. This includes a focus on national staff who are a priority group for leadership and career support in the interest of building diverse talent pipelines. Ongoing reforms within OCHA and the wider Secretariat reinforce the need for new skills to drive necessary changes to meet organizational demands including in the context of OCHA’s work on anti-racism, localization and decentralization.
Since the launch of the People Strategy, increased investments have been made through the Leadership Development Programme, cohort 1-4 (2018-19) with 373 staff who have participated in a range of courses targeting executive level, emerging leaders, women leaders and general service staff. A focus on diversity and inclusion in leadership has been integrated into the approach with emphasis on achieving goals related to gender parity and geographical diversity. To complement the leadership development programme in support of wider career development, OCHA has launched the Career Development Support Programme in 2019. The CDSP is structured around three components including mentoring, coaching and stretch assignments. Currently the CDSP mentoring component has been mainstreamed as a core offering, a coaching skills training for managers has been successfully piloted and plans are underway for future cohorts. Group mentoring and peer coaching are additional components to be developed under the programme. A third component on stretch assignments is planned to be developed and rolled out on a pilot basis.
